Meet the Team: Jessica Shafer

Welcome to the TMC interview! What attracted you to Tigermoth Creative?

I’ve known Andrea Spencer for a little while now and have always been intrigued by what she does as a writer, but what really drew me to TMC was their work with nonprofit organizations and local communities. A big part of my drive and passion is to make every story known and every voice heard, and that’s a big part of the work done at Tigermoth.

Who is on your playlist right now? What are you reading?

I’ve been listening to a lot of Gospel music recently. Nothing particularly specific, just whatever is on the Apple Music playlists. As for reading, there’s “Sing, Unburied, Sing” by Jesmyn Ward and “The Power of Different” by Dr. Gail Saltz that I’m studying for school, and I’ve been tearing through Lemony Snicket’s “A Series of Unfortunate Events” as my fun read!

How do you spend your free time outside of Tigermoth?

As a student, most of the time that I spend outside of Tigermoth is dedicated to school work. For the sake of a more fun answer though, I also love spending time with friends and family getting coffee and tea or going on walks.

Where would you take the Tigermoth team out to dinner?

This is a tough one! If budget and location weren’t boundaries, I’d love to go to a Morinmoto’s started by Japanese Iron Chef winner Masaharu Morimoto. I had dinner at the location in Florida, and it changed my life. There’s a lot of good food to be found in the Greensboro area as well though, a few of my favorites are: Gia’s, Saffron’s, Thai Square, Boba House and Wasabi.

Favorite movie and why. Have you ever cried at a movie? Which one?

I think Disney’s “A Goofy Movie” will always be my favorite movie just because of how fun and silly it is. As for crying at movies…it’s more a question of which ones haven’t made me cry. The reality is I’m a sucker for that wonderful and manipulative music that makes me feel whatever it wants me to. I blame you, John Williams.

Early bird or night owl?

I want so badly to be an early bird. I’ve always preferred sunrises to sunsets and love having space for myself in the morning when everything seems still and quiet. The reality is that I just don’t have the discipline to wake up when I want to…nothing drains me of motivation to do anything like a nice, warm bed.

Who do you subscribe to on YouTube?

If they got their start on vine or are a musician, I probably subscribe to them on YouTube. I love anything that Cody Ko makes. Drew Gooden makes me laugh with every single video. Dodie Clark is just plain awesome, and as an honorable mention I have The Asher House because who doesn’t love inspirational dog stories.

Jessica Shafer is the new writing intern at Tigermoth Creative. Currently in school at UNCW, Jessica is pursuing her degree in English Literature with a minor in creative writing and a certificate in professional writing. In her free time, she loves to read, play music and eat good food.
